Explore the best child-friendly beaches on Crete

With 113 Blue Flag beaches on Crete, families are spoilt for choice when it comes to spending a day by the sea!

Child-friendly beaches with shallow, calm waters and soft, golden sand are found throughout the island, and the vast majority are organised with a lifeguard on duty throughout the day. Mirabello Bay is blessed with a number of just such beaches, with excellent infrastructure and safe sea access, whilst its east-facing coastline results in calm, warm waters that can reach up to 28°C in the height of summer!

The child-friendly beaches worth visiting near Agios Nikolaos

2.5km south of Agios Nikolaos is the long sandy beach of Almyros, with its shimmering white sand and shallow waters making it perfect for small explorers. In the summer, excellent water sports are offered at the beach, with activities for children of all ages. Close by, just a few kilometres to the south, is Ammoudara Beach, another popular and safe stretch of sand with a number of tavernas and cafes lining its shores.

When the sun is shining and the waves are calling you, head to Voulisma beach, also called Golden Beach…for obvious reasons! The beach’s mesmerising white sand contrasts with the emerald waters lapping its shores, giving the whole area a tropical Caribbean vibe! A gentle slope within the sea and its warm, shallow waters make it the perfect destination for families with small children.

Heading north, on the Spinalonga peninsula opposite the resort town of Elounda, is a small, picture-perfect stretch of sand called Kolokytha Beach. The beach has little in the way of facilities and so it is important to come prepared, although this means the water is exceptionally clean and the atmosphere retains an aura of secretive exclusivity. Back on the main island, make a stop at Plaka Beach – perhaps one of the most scenic beaches on Crete with the historic fortress of Spinalonga looming on the horizon. Plaka Beach is blanketed in white pebbles, meaning it is often less crowded than the more popular sandy beaches, but remember to bring beach shoes to make exploring easier.
