With origins lost in the mists of time, the Greek myths are ancient epic stories featuring gods and heroes, passed down orally over the generations. They feature heroic battles, brave warriors, fearsome beasts and mysterious goddesses, and were an important part of the religion of Ancient Greece.

Greek mythology is known for its fabulous stories and magical events, although it is likely that many elements of the stories have historical roots. The earliest literary sources of the Greek myths come from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey (c.760 BC), as well as Thesiod’s Theogony, or ‘Origin of the Gods’ (c.700 BC). Imagine that by the time Homer wrote the Odyssey, the events of the Trojan War were already history, having happened some 500 years before!

After the story of creation, starting only with chaos, a vast nothingness, and progressing to gaia (the earth), eros (love), uranus (the sky), came the era of the Titans: six male and six female giants, led by the youngest, Cronus. Cronus was later overthrown by his son, Zeus, and thus began the era of the gods. Alongside Zeus, the principal Greek gods were Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes and Hestia, and they resided together on Mount Olympus.

Later in the chronology, gods and humans begin living side by side, culminating in the ‘heroic age’ of Hercules, Jason and other noble warriors. Often, these heroes were the offspring of a god and a mortal, explaining their extraordinary powers and abilities even whilst human.
